Mega Gyarados, Mega Garchomp, and Mega Ampharos.

It’s easy to see why many Pokémon fans love the Mega Evolutions. They were a breath of fresh air and allowed many a favorite Pokémon to once more be competitive in the arena.

Unfortunately, though, not all of the Mons had the luck of receiving the same treatment as favorites like Gardevoir and Gengar. Here are the worst Mega Evolutions to ever debut in the Pokémon franchise.

The worst-looking Mega Evolutions in Pokémon

A less traumatizing version of the Amoonguss phenomenon, where a design takes a turn for the worse after an evolution, some Megas became known for being, at the very least, disappointing when compared to their peers. You can check out our picks for the worst-looking Mega Evolutions in Pokémon below:

Mega Aerodactyl

Following the example of Blastoise and Charizard Y, Mega Aerodactyl does not bring any huge changes to the table. Unlike the others, however, it’s clear from the get-go that our flying fossil got the short end of the stick. Add a rock goatee and a frown to an Aerodactyl, and boom, here’s your Mega Evolution.

Mega Manectric

In one of the most disappointing design choices in the franchise, Mega Manectric became infamously known for, instead of the Super Saiyan treatment many hoped for, getting an exaggerated lightning bolt as its biggest feature. On the upside, its high speed and SP ATK allow the Pokémon to quickly put an end to battles, so you won’t have to look at it for long.

Mega Gyarados

Going one step above the legend that gave birth to it, Mega Gyarados takes what was once one of the most dominant Pokémon and turns it into a giant shrimp—or a blow horn if you want to get creative. Honestly, although the larger fins and new color scheme do a lot to soften the blow, they are not enough to save it from getting a spot here.

Mega Dragonite

Did you ever wonder what a Dragonite wearing Mario’s Wing Cap would look like? Wonder no more. For some reason, that seems to be the design the Pokémon Company went for with its Mega Evolution. I’d better stop here or this piece might turn into a rant. But come on, would it hurt to keep the design of the wings while giving it a more practical main feature?

Mega Latios and Latias

For me, the worst-looking Megas in history, Mega Latios and Mega Latias, succeeded in killing the uniqueness of both by featuring the same color palette and identical designs. If that was not bad enough, the dark purple doesn’t pop with the light grey, which makes them even more underwhelming to the eye when compared to even their regular forms.

The worst Mega Evolutions in Pokémon

Designs aside, a few Mega Evolutions also stand out through their kits. Or to be more specific, via either how little they add or how badly they fit the Pokémon. Here are the worst Mega Evolutions in Pokémon history, starting with an honourable mention:

Honourable Mention: Mega Garchomp

The case study for unnecessary Mega Evolutions, Cynthia’s favorite gets a mention here via its -10 Speed when compared to its regular form. We cannot undermine how impactful the decrease is here, as although the overall boosts received in exchange are welcome, Garchomp’s 100+ Speed has always been the cherry on top that allows it to shine even when compared to currently meta sweepers.

Mega Ampharos

Given its balanced stat distribution, Mega Ampharos should be a great pick, capable of dealing high Special ATK DMG and fitting some strategies well (cough… Trick Room). However, life is not that kind, as its inability to learn meta offensive (Draco Meteor) or impactful utility-based moves, paired with how squishy it can be for its dual type (Dragon/Electric), makes it an uninspiring pick at high levels.

Mega Camerupt

A divisive pick at first, considering its highly damaging STAB moves and the DMG-enhancing effects of Sheer Force, Mega Camerupt’s 20 Speed stat is the bane of its kit. To make matters worse, its 4x weakness to Water makes its defense pretty much null when faced with any well-thought-out matchups.

Mega Banette

When looking at its outstanding ATK, which outclasses even Mega Lucario’s, and the combo potential of Prankster, it’s hard to tell at first why Mega Banette ended up here. Taking a look at its move list will more than justify it, though, as the evolution does not have a single offensive pick capable of fully utilizing the high stat, with Shadow Claw and Shadow Sneak being its best bets. Also, did we mention how its low speed and defensive stats make it a prime target?

Mega Abomasnow

Remember what we said about Mega Camerupt? Well, Mega Abomasnow suffers from much the same fate, because while it can work when well supported via its solid defense and good spread moves, it has a solid recipe for failure in its 4x Fire Weakness and 40 Speed. Like its base form, the Pokémon is also weak to, and keep note: Fighting, Poison, Flying, Bug, Rock, and Steel.

Mega Audino

By far the cutest Mega Evolution in Pokémon, Mega Audino is also unfortunately one of the worst, given its subpar Speed and the RNG nature of Healer (which replaces Regenerator as its ability). Although having a pretty diverse selection of other supporting moves and solid defensive stats, its low Special ATK also makes the Pokémon a Mega unable to deal significant damage in any shape or form. As you can expect, the latter is more than enough reason for many to never touch it in favor of less restrictive options.
