When Marvel Rivals’ newest seasonal update goes live next week, you will want to keep your salty language in check more than ever before, according to developer NetEase Games.
The new hero, Blade, along with a new game mode and map, will come in the season 3.5 update for the hero shooter on Aug. 8, but so, too, will a new host of options and abilities to keep the game friendly and “a fun and welcoming experience for all.”

In what NetEase is calling Operation: Shield the Community, the game’s systems will “automatically screen in-game voice chat in addition to the existing player reports and manual review, with oversight from real people” so that the team will be able to “catch more toxic behavior, and anyone using inappropriate language will face penalties.”
“First and foremost, we sincerely ask all our Rivals to keep their cool, stay composed, and remember: even if a match looks hopeless, don’t give up because a good strategy and mindset can turn the tide faster than Hulk can smash!” NetEase said, with an emphasis on voice chat over text chat since inappropriate content appears more often in the former. “Currently, our voice content review relies on player reports and manual review. But soon, we’re rolling out automated systems that’ll catch trouble faster than Spider-Man’s Spidey Sense. This means even if no one reports a villainous act, our system will swing in to proactively identify and penalize violations.”
Basically, this means all voice chat is being recorded, and you need to watch what you say. Once the potential infractions are flagged by NetEase’s system, the dev’s moderation team will be “on call around the clock to review ambiguous cases and make final decisions,” which won’t happen instantly like can happen with text chat.
Speaking of text chat, NetEase is giving players more control of it by giving them the ability to add custom muted words, automatically filtering out the message before it appears in game chat.
“We know it’s impossible to eliminate all inappropriate language, but we’re committed to protecting the experience of as many players as possible,” NetEase said. “We hope everyone will join us in this mission. By watching your own words and actions, and by reporting any violations you encounter, you’ll help keep our community worthy of its heroes.”
Season 3.5 of Marvel Rivals goes live on Aug. 8, so if you have to cuss in game chat, do it before then.
