A new saga of Destiny 2 is ready to kick off in just a few months with The Edge of Fate expansion, Bungie announced today.
This new “Fates Saga” of the franchise kicks off with the new DLC and will deal directly with The Nine, a behind the scenes entity of incredibly powerful beings that have been around before the Traveler, and will now take center stage after being teased through the lore for years.
In today’s stream, Bungie described The Nine as their own beings and not a hivemind, meaning there are nine different entities with different wants and needs. As extradimensional beings, it appears they are bigger, more powerful, and potentially more problematic than even The Witness.
In the short reveal for The Edge of Fate, it teased a “an invitation to a location and a moment in time.” This location is Kepler, a new area at the edge of the solar system for players to play in and explore, which Bungie described as “a Metroidvania sort of experience.” The expansion will also introduce World Tiers for the first time, with higher difficulties in the locale, similar to the system in a game like Diablo 4.
Another gameplay feature teased by Bungie is something called Matterspark, which will allow Guardians to morph into a lightning ball and fly around, dealing damage and traveling through areas in new ways.
This new post-Witness and Final Shape D2 story will be told through multiple expansions, including The Edge of Fate. Later in 2025, Renegades will be the second expansion coming this winter. In 2026, Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist will be up next, meaning that the next few years of D2 will continue the franchise in big ways.
Bungie says that two new expansions a year (smaller scale, “slightly bigger than Rise of Iron“) as opposed to one big DLC like The Final Shape or The Witch Queen will be the new norm moving forward. But it begins in-game in D2 today with Rite of the Nine, a prequel to the DLC featuring The Emissary and new ways to play existing Dungeons.
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate launches in just over two months on July 15.
The post Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate locks in July release date for Bungie’s latest expansion, but 3 more DLC’s have already been confirmed appeared first on Destructoid.
